Massive Darkness

About

A co-op tactics boardgame with lots of miniatures.

If you are looking for a co-op dungeon crawler with a small bit of tactics that you can just jump into and play a single game without having to keep track of a story, this might be for you.

And it also has just a ton of miniatures (68) so if you just want a ton of miniatures, this might be your thing.

This was one of the first Kickstarters I purchased and while waiting we really got into Jaws of the Lion, loved it, and finished it. So when this one arrived I was stoked. But, it just never scratched that itch.

Most importantly, the Kickstarter promised a "campaign mode" but the "campaign" is a total afterthought. While there is a story behind the levels, it's obvious the intention was to have multiple "one off" battles where each is totally self-contained.

o what if you play it for what it is? A single level for a single evening of play. Is it any fun? Meh.

It is VERY fiddly. Think Gloomhaven levels of fiddly. We played with only 2 people and there is no way I could see this as fun with any more. Heck I might have to play again solo just to see if that helps.

A large part of the problems is the very miniatures that sold me on the game in the first place. The problems is they just don't fit on the board very well with to many miniatures, to little space, and a lot to keep track of. We actually had a better time when we experimented with using poker chips instead of the monster mini's. Setup was faster and it was much easier to see and understand the entire board. It makes me wonder what Chip Theory Games could do.

Boy did I want to like this game. Different types of characters with unique skills and tons of awesome miniatures. However, I found it a bit clumsy with gameplay - especially when you get 3 actions, but a move is half an action as is opening doors. The lack of a story really killed it for me. While I don't need some grand backstory and to read pages of lore per scenario, it would be nice to have something more than "Kill all the monsters and close the rift.
